The Epsom Derby began in 1661 as an unnamed match race. The 1865 Epsom Derby winner was Gladiateur, depicted on our Epsom pillow. Owned by Count F de Lagrange and ridden by jockey H Grimshaw, his time was 2 minutes and 46 seconds.
